PHOENIX — Arizona’s Brandon Webb threw off the mound for the first time in three months, a move he didn’t expect.

The former NL Cy Young Award winner wasn’t told of the Diamondbacks’ plans until pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre Jr. told him to go the bullpen after he played catch as scheduled Saturday. Webb said he threw about 30 pitches and finally is seeing “a little light at the end of the tunnel.”

The right-hander has been slow to recover from shoulder surgery. Webb said he expects to throw off the mound again Wednesday. He has not pitched in a game since the season opener last year.

• The Diamondbacks activated catcher Miguel Montero from the disabled list.

Matsuzaka goes on the DL

BOSTON — Red Sox right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka was a late scratch before his scheduled start against the Phillies and was placed on the 15-day disabled list just before the game’s first pitch with a strained forearm.

Matsuzaka warmed up in the bullpen and walked to the dugout about 15 minutes before the scheduled start.

The Red Sox recalled left- hander Dustin Richardson from Triple-A to take Matsuzaka’s spot on the roster.

Cardinals to sign Suppan

PHOENIX — Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said the team expects to sign Jeff Suppan and add the right-hander to its injury-depleted rotation early this week.

Footnotes.

Alex Rodriguez was out of the Yankees’ starting lineup for the second consecutive game because of a sore right hip.

• The Rangers placed right-hander Rich Harden on the 15-day DL with a strained left gluteus muscle one day after another ineffective start.

• The Rays placed outfielder Gabe Kapler on the 15-day DL with a strained right hip flexor and recalled outfielder Justin Ruggiano from Triple-A Durham.
