Upriver from Buena Vista and Salida, two destination towns for recreational boaters, Cañon City officials recently opened this enticement to whitewater addicts. The park’s core includes a set of man-made waves that will end a Royal Gorge float trip with an exclamation point. The park hosts the Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival on June 25 and 26, a week after the popular Fibark festival in Salida.

It started 11 years ago when a few townspeople persuaded the city to save the trunks of some dead cottonwoods for sculptures. The result was so successful that boosters established a wood-carving festival, drawing whittlers from throughout the U.S.
