A Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy in training caused a three-car accident on C-470 near West Bowles Avenue this evening.

The deputy was making a U-turn across a median to respond to a call when he pulled into traffic and was hit by two trucks at about 5:15 p.m., said Sgt. John Hahn of the Colorado State Patrol.

Both deputies and the driver of one of the trucks was taken to the hospital with minor injuries as a precautionary measure, Hahn said.

The deputy will face careless driving charges, he said.

He referred questions about the deputies to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department. Spokeswoman Jacki Kelley would not release the deputies’ names. She said she was not aware they had been charged, and she wasn’t sure if their families had been notified that they had been injured on duty. She said more information might be released on Monday.

“One of them was a junior officer in training with a senior officer,” she said.

She said the Sheriff’s Department would review the State Patrol’s investigation before making any decisions about the deputy.

“A variety of things could happen, from remedial training, to sanctions to nothing at all,” she said.
