Take Dad for a ride
The inaugural Coldwell Banker Denver Century Ride is Sunday at Invesco Field at Mile High. The Denver Century Ride will offer three scenic routes ranging from beginner to expert, and a Father’s Day Finish Line Festival with entertainment and activities. The charity cycling event includes a 22-mile family fun ride along the flat paths of the Platte River Trail. For more advanced cyclists, the 62-mile metric century (100 kilometers) ride climbs Lookout Mountain and descends along Red Rocks Park, through downtown Morrison and along the hogbacks. The full 100-mile challenge, with an elevation change of 4,050 feet, winds through urban, suburban and rural settings. The route follows the metric century until it peels off to the south into Highlands Ranch and Castle Pines before heading back north to Dove Valley, Cherry Creek State Park and downtown Denver. Registration for adults for the 100- or 62-mile ride is $70, and $55 for the family fun ride; children under 14, $35. ($10 of every registration will be donated to several nonprofit partners including Denver’s Road Home, Rocky Mountain Children’s Law Center, The Davis Phinney Foundation for Parkinson’s Disease, BikeDenver and Bicycle Colorado.)
Fitness in the foothills
Boulder boot-camper David Clair offers drop-in classes Saturday mornings on Boulder’s open-space trails. Using the outdoors as a virtual weight room, the workout incorporates rocks, tree limbs and picnic tables, and pauses for short strength and cardio intervals — push-ups or scissor lunges, triceps dips from a bench or step, lateral hops over a log, curls and overhead presses using a rock or resistance band, or pull-ups and leg lifts from a tree limb. Classes are $15, 8-9:30 a.m., through Sept. 25.
