KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M.—Control of a military reconnaissance satellite assembled at Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico has been shifted from the Air Force Research Laboratory to the Air Force Space Command in Colorado.
The transfer was completed Saturday.
Tactical Satellite 3—known as TacSat-3—was launched in May 2009 as part of an Air Force program that seeks to launch small, relatively inexpensive satellites quickly into orbit to assist war fighters on the ground.
Until now, the satellite was deemed an “experimental demonstration” craft under the control of several civilian and military agencies. But as of this week, it is an operational satellite under the control of Air Force Space Command.
