A man received severe burns Tuesday afternoon in a townhome fire in Lakewood.

The fire broke out shortly after 1 p.m. at 1541 S. Owens St., said Cindy Matthews, a West Metro Fire Protection District spokeswoman.

Neighbors heard odd noises, smelled smoke and left their town home to investigate, Matthews said.

“He has third-degree burns over 80 percent of his body,” she said.

The unidentified victim, who is in his mid-50s, was taken by ambulance to St. Anthony Central Hospital and then transferred to the University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora.
