Leaders from Colorado politics, economic development and airports have written letters and statements of support for the proposed merger of United and Continental airlines.

United has about half of the market share at Denver International Airport. Continental chips in for about 2 percent of the Denver market.

On May 3, chief executives Glenn Tilton of United and Jeffery Smisek of Continental announced that the nation’s third- and fourth-largest airlines will consolidate to form the world’s largest carrier.

On the list of merger supporters named by the two airlines are: Gov. Bill Ritter, Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce CEO Kelly Brough, Metro Denver Economic Development Corp. executive vice president Tom Clark, Visit Denver CEO Richard Scharf, DIA manager Kim Day, Colorado Springs Airport director Mark Earle, Durango/La Plata County Airport director Ron Dent and Yampa Valley Regional Airport manager D.E.
