The RTD shuttle bus driver who hit a bicyclist on the mall has resigned from his job.

Sander Klein, 43, resigned from the transportation district on Thursday morning, said Scott Reed, an RTD spokesman.

“RTD bus operators need to do everything they possibly can to avoid an accident,” Reed said. “Sadly, that did not happen in this case.”

Klein was driving a 16th Street Mall shuttle at about 9:40 p.m. on June 6 when the bus hit a 72-year-old bicyclist between Lawrence and Larimer streets.

A rear wheel of the shuttle ran over the bicyclist’s leg. He suffered severe injuries and was taken to Denver Health Medical Center.

Witnesses told police investigators that the bus driver honked his horn at the bicyclist, but did not slow down as it got closer.

“The bus (driver) signaled his horn at the biker but did not slow down or allow the biker to move over,” a witness told police, according to the accident report.

The victim is now listed in fair condition at the medical center, according to a spokesman.

The Denver Police Department has cited Klein for careless driving resulting in injury. He has an upcoming court date scheduled on July 12.
