ESTES PARK, Colo.—A 17-year-old girl from Michigan has died after being hit by a falling rock in Estes Park.

Audra Brownell of Sparta, was hit Thursday in an open space next to town hall. A cliff rises above the grassy area with a creek running through it.

Town spokeswoman Kate Rusch says police are investigating witnesses about what happened. She says the town’s civil engineer is assessing the area’s safety.

Rusch couldn’t estimate the size of the rock or say what caused it to fall.

The coroner has ruled the death accidental.

Estes Park serves as the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park, 70 miles northwest of Denver.
