Two new grocery locations will open Wednesday morning in the metro area.

Boulder-based Sunflower Farmers Market will open a store at Arapahoe Marketplace on East Arapahoe Road in Greenwood Village, and SmartCo Foods will open a location on South Parker Road in Denver.

Sunflower will occupy the majority of space vacated by Albertsons.

The Arapahoe Marketplace store will be the 10th in Colorado for fast-growing Sunflower, which operates 27 outlets in six Western states. Four more stores are under development.

“We like the demographics at Arapahoe Marketplace,” said Bennett Bertoli, vice president of real estate for Sunflower. “It should be a strong store for us.”

Smart & Final Stores acquired five vacant Albertsons sites and is opening new SmartCo Foods outlets, with the first at 1442 S. Parker Road on Wednesday.

The SmartCo line is a new venture for Commerce, Calif.-based Smart & Final. The stores will be larger than any other of the firm’s grocery-store chains, offering more produce, meats and bulk food products.

The SmartCo chain will provide “the quality and variety that your favorite supermarket offers, plus the bulk assortment and savings of your favorite warehouse club store. You can buy a little or a lot, large or small sizes,” said George Golleher, chief executive of Smart & Final.
