GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—A former used-car salesman has been sentenced to 53 years in prison for selling salvaged vehicles without telling the buyers how badly damaged the vehicles were.
A Mesa County judge sentenced 68-year-old Camden Fortney Tuesday. District Judge Brian Flynn also ordered him to pay $584,000 in restitution to the unsuspecting customers.
Flynn handed down the long sentence despite a request by prosecutors for 10 years in prison. The judge said Fortney hasn’t taken responsibility for his actions.
A state grand jury indicted Fortney and two others last year in a scheme selling vehicles that had been deemed total losses with clean titles. A Mesa County jury in April convicted Fortney of 21 felony counts of defrauding customers.
