When Vickie Ockey and her family moved into their Roxborough Park home, neighbors told them to beware of bears.

But something still attracted a bear to Ockey’s home in the early morning hours of June 18. After hearing a commotion, her husband looked downstairs to find the bear sitting on the couple’s kitchen floor. The refrigerator and pantry had been open and the bear was eating everything in sight.

Jennifer Churchill with the Colorado Division of Wildlife says that spring and summer brings bears out of hibernation and into neighborhoods.

“We will see cubs come back the next year and continue to have this behavior where they’re going into homes because that’s what mom taught them,” she said.

That is why the bear that came into Ockey’s home had to be euthanized. So did another bear that broke into a home in the same neighborhood on Wednesday night.
