Federal Boulevard is still closed northbound from East Colfax to East 14th avenues after a microburst brought down a powerline.

Both directions of Federal were initially closed while fire crews tried to help a vehicle that had been tangled in the fallen powerline.

Xcel Energy shut down power to the lines involved so that the person in the vehicle could exit, according to Phil Champagne, spokesman for the Denver Fire Department.

To avoid risk of electocution, the person had been asked to remain in the vehicle.

A microburst — an isolated gust of cool air that results from precipitation that evaporates high above the ground — is credited with bringing down the line, and about 11 others in the metro area, according to Mark Stutz, an Xcel spokesman.

The gusty winds also caused tree damage at Clarkson Street and Bayaud Avenue.
