University of Colorado assistant track coach Casey Malone successfully defended his discus title Friday at the U.S. Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, winning with a toss of a 205 feet, 3 inches, nearly 5 1/2 feet better than the runner-up.

Malone was a four-time All-American and the 1998 NCAA discus champion at Colorado State, and was a 2004 Olympian.

Former Buffs Jenny Barringer and Brent Vaughn had top-five finishes: Barringer was third in the 5,000, and Vaughn was fifth in the 5K.

Top seeds advance at Denver City Open.

The top four seeds are headed for a showdown in men’s open singles in the Denver City Open at the Denver Tennis Center.

Defending champion Cory Ross posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over No. 8-seed Alex Clinkenbeard, and No. 2 Willie Dann, No. 3 Lewis Miller and No. 4 Stephen Nolen also won their quarterfinal matches.

Hansen commits to Rams.

Colorado State beefed up its future front when Longmont High School lineman Justin Hansen committed to play for the Rams, according to a report at .

He recorded three sacks as a defensive tackle his junior season, but Rivals lists him as an offensive lineman.

Also, the NCAA granted a sixth year of eligibility to Rams offensive lineman Connor Smith.

Smith, a 6-foot-4, 287-pound guard, suffered a shoulder injury last season, keeping him off the field. He had been listed as a senior. Instead, he will now enter the 2010 season as a junior with two years of eligibility remaining.
