VAIL, Colo.—A 27-year-old hiker who was stranded on the Mount of the Holy Cross near Vail has been picked up by a helicopter.

The Eagle County sheriff’s office said Friday they were looking for a Denver-area man suffering from altitude sickness. A Colorado Army National Guard helicopter dropped a rescue team onto the mountain, one of the best known of Colorado’s 14,000-foot peaks.

The sheriff’s office got a call at 8:30 a.m. from another hiker in the man’s group saying that he was in need of medical attention on the mountain.

The National Guard dispatched a Black Hawk helicopter to help from the high-aviation helicopter training school it operates in nearby Gypsum.
