Riley Arp of Collindale Golf Club won the Colorado Golf Association’s Public Links Championship at Hyland Hills Golf Course in Westminster, shooting a 3-under-par 69 in the final round Sunday.
Arp, a former Colorado State player, overcame a one-stroke deficit with three holes to play and defeated Sean Thomas (final-round 70) of Indian Tree Golf Course by two strokes. Arp, who qualified for the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship last week, won his first CGA championship with a 13-under 203 total (69, 65, 69) for three rounds.
Thomas, a CSU-Pueblo golfer, grabbed a one-shot lead with five birdies during a sizzling stretch from the ninth hole to the 15th. But he missed the green on the par-3 16th and had to settle for a bogey. He made a double bogey on 17 after hitting his tee shot under a tree.
Arp and Thomas birdied the final hole.
Slattery third in steeplechase.
University of Colorado product Steve Slattery finished third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the USATF Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.
Slattery’s time was 8 minutes, 33.23 seconds. Daniel Huling of Reebok won the event in 8:27.87.
Jeremy Dodson, a former CU sprinter, failed to qualify for the finals in the 200 meters. He placed 13th in the semifinals, finishing in 20.99 seconds.
