The Sugar Bees, who have cycled in the bike ride benefiting multiple sclerosis for 12 years, have completed raising a million dollars.
They become the first Colorado team to have raised a million dollars during the 25-year history of the Great-West Life Bike MS/Colorado’s Ride.
This year’s Sugar Bees had 140 cyclists on the team, and each one contributed to this year’s $100,000.
Organizers for this year’s bike ride said the goal for this weekend was set at $3.2 million, and at least $2.8 million was accounted for Sunday afternoon.
More money is expected during the week as pledge money is collected.
The Sugar Bees is led by brothers Tim and Eric Walker of Arvada, who have participated for the past 12 years in support of their younger sister who was diagnosed with the disease 18 years ago at age 22.
The two-day ride along the Front Range sold out with about 3,000 cyclists participating this year.
