PITTSBURGH — Steelers offensive tackle Willie Colon injured his right Achilles tendon Monday while working out at the team’s practice complex. If the tendon is torn, he is likely to require surgery that would end his season.

Colon’s injury could be a major blow to the Steelers’ plans to put a greater emphasis on the running game. They have little depth at tackle behind Colon and Max Starks, the starters.

Giants rookie improving.

The father of Giants rookie safety Chad Jones said his son is in good spirits and that his injured left leg and foot are looking better. In a statement, Al Jones said a long healing process is just beginning but added that “everything is positive” with his son’s recovery from an auto accident Friday.

Chad Jones’ agent told the Gannett Louisiana News Service it’s possible Jones might switch to baseball if the stress of a contact sport proves too much for his injured lower leg. Jones was an outfielder and left-handed relief pitcher at LSU and was a 50th-round pick by the Milwaukee Brewers in this year’s draft.

• The Giants waived kick returner Chris Davis after he failed his physical.

Footnotes.

The NFL will review the conduct of Lions president Tom Lewand, who was cited over the weekend for drunken driving after telling authorities he was a designated driver before a test showed his blood-alcohol content was twice Michigan’s legal limit.

• The Rams signed eight of their rookie draft picks and can now turn their attention to the big one: No. 1 overall selection Sam Bradford.

• West Virginia University researchers said Bengals receiver Chris Henry suffered from a chronic brain injury that may have influenced his mental state and behavior before he died last winter after falling or jumping from the back of a pickup truck.
