Hunters planning to pursue elk in the Gunnison region this fall are reminded that general, over-the-counter bull licenses no longer are valid in game management unit 54 during the second season.
Instead, 500 either-sex licenses specific to unit 54 will be available over the counter, beginning July 13. They will be available, first- come, first-served, at DOW offices and license outlets statewide, by calling 800-244-5613 or online at /ShopDOW/AppsAndLicenses.
In another change, archery elk licenses in units 54, 55 and 551 are totally limited.
A set number of over-the-counter permits for cow elk will be available in units 25 and 26, located north of Interstate 70 approximately between Gypsum and Yampa.
Anyone hunting bears during the regular rifle season must have a deer or elk license for the same season, with the same manner of take and in the same unit in which bears will be hunted.
