ASPEN, Colo.—A camping area near Aspen is off limits to holiday campers after a black bear got into two tents.
No one was injured at the Castle Creek area in the White River National Forest. The U.S. Forest Service closed it to keep campers safe and help keep the bear—which has had no previous problems—from picking up more bad habits.
The radio-collared bear entered a tent and feasted on granola, baked beans and chicken bones at a campsite on Wednesday and then visited Jeff Powell’s site on Thursday. Powell said he locked all his family’s food in the car. The bear still shredded his tent and two sleeping pads even though there was no food inside.
He bought a new tent Friday and plans to camp elsewhere in the area with his wife and 2-year-old daughter.
