DENVER—A 24-year-old Marine from Thornton has been killed in Afghanistan.
Twenty-four-year-old Cpl. Larry D. Harris, Jr. died Thursday after being struck by a roadside bomb while on foot patrol in the Garmsir district of Helmand Province.
The Marine Corps said he was a mortarman assigned to the Marine Expeditionary Force based at Camp Pendleton, Calif.
Harris joined the Marines four years ago and was serving on his second combat deployment. He also served in Iraq in 2007.
He won several decorations, including a Purple Heart, a Combat Action ribbon and a National Defense Service medal.
His death came a day after a four-hour gunbattle that resulted in the capture a key Taliban figure elsewhere in Helmand province.
