A judge on Friday ordered an unlicensed Denver debt collector to cease operations, the result of a lawsuit filed by the state attorney general.

The temporary restraining order against David Faith & Associates and its owner, Chad Lee, came after state officials months ago warned the company to stop working as a debt collector without proper licensing.

The company started collections in October 2009 and state officials a month later said it needed a license. Though Lee filed an application, he continued to collect on debts, Attorney General John Suthers alleges in court documents. The state in May denied Lee’s license in part because he said on the application that neither he nor his employees had a criminal background.

Court records show Lee was convicted of felony theft in 1999 and one of his employees was convicted of shoplifting a year earlier in Utah.

A hearing on the Denver District Court lawsuit has not been scheduled.
