Deborah Crowley of Colorado Springs is the recipient of this week’s $25 gift card to REI for this terrific tip on traveling with teens.

“Traveling with my kids when they were in their teens was often like emptying my wallet, all day long,” she wrote via e-mail. “To curb the endless supply of quarters for vending machines and money for souvenirs, I started giving each of them $25 every morning. This was their travel allowance to cover meals and any extras for that day.

“My daughter, the saver, often had money left over at the end of each day, and there were times when my son had a pile of souvenirs but not much left for dinner. This system taught them how to live on a budget, and our little family had some wonderful road trips together.”
