A passenger in the Chevy Cobalt hit head-on in the southbound lanes of Interstate 25 near Mead on Monday has died, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Trooper Heather Cobler identified the woman as Jane Smith, 58, from Boone, N.C.

The Cobalt’s driver, Barry Smith, 58, of Boone, remains in serious condition at the Medical Center of the Rockies, according to Cobler.

The Cobalt was traveling southbound on I-25 Monday morning when a gold Kia Spectra in the northbound lanes crossed the center median and slammed into the Cobalt head-on in the southbound lanes.

The State Patrol said an initial investigation indicated that the Kia Spectra, driven by Jordan Trujillo, 20, of Longmont, and a Geo Metro, driven by Neil Bouvart, 40, of Lakewood, sideswiped each other in the northbound lanes seconds before the Kia crossed the median and hit the Cobalt.

Trujillo, the driver of the Kia, was taken to Longmont United Hospital with serious injuries. Trujillo’s passenger, Jennifer Daigle, 20, also of Longmont, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Bouvart, the driver of the Geo Metro, was not injured.

Cobler said the crash remains under investigation.
