Small businesses need support as they get started, and a nonprofit group is teaming up with Colorado Heights University to provide practical advice that helps them grow.
Called Score, the group of small- business executives will hold business seminars this fall on the university’s campus at 3001 S. Federal Blvd.
“The emphasis is on the south metro area, and the South Federal area is more economically challenged,” said Jack Scott, Score’s marketing director.
The university, with its emphasis on business education, is well-situated to reach that sector, said Doug Phelps, CHU’s director of U.S. business development.
“We stopped at every business on Federal up to Alameda, and the response was very positive,” Phelps said.
CHU is particularly interested in recruiting Latinos who may not have considered owning a business or attending college to learn how to be a business owner, Phelps said.
The CHU-Score partnership will be rolled out with a community fair from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday on the campus.
Along with free business workshops will be a soccer match, barbecue, exhibits and campus tours.
Score’s Denver chapter members have been offering free counseling and low-cost workshops to small businesses since 1964.
As part of the partnership, Score will share expertise with CHU students “so they will be more job-ready at graduation,” Scott said.
