Venture-capital investment in Colorado has dropped to its lowest rate since the end of 1996, according to a report released Thursday.

Nearly $51 million was invested in Colorado companies during the second quarter, according to the quarterly MoneyTree report developed by PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP and the National Venture Capital Association.

The software industry received about 57 percent of the money invested during the second quarter, and biotechnology got 32 percent.

Those receiving funds included Douglas County clean-technology company Gevo Inc., $16.2 million; Boulder media and entertainment company SimpleGeo Inc., $8.1 million; Denver software firm Safety Inc., $8 million; and Denver software company IP Commerce Inc., $7.5 million. The Denver Post
