CALCUTTA, India — A speeding express train slammed into a passenger train at a station in eastern India early today, mangling the carriages and killing at least 56 people, railway police said. At least 125 people were injured.

The Uttarbanga Express hit the stationary Bananchal Express about 2 a.m. at Sainthia station, about 125 miles north of Calcutta.

The crash destroyed a luggage car and two passenger cars reserved for the cheapest tickets. Such carriages are usually packed to capacity.
