Boulder County officials are on guard for wildfires after more than 1,600 lightning strikes the past two weeks, including one that caused a quarter-acre blaze Sunday near South Boulder Peak.

The fire was burning in heavy timber at the top of a ridge, but officials expect a helicopter with a water bucket to have the blaze doused by sunrise, the Sheriff’s Department said in a statement.

“Due to the current hot weather and drying fuels along with this high amount of lightning, local wildland fire conditions are reaching moderate to high severity levels,” the Sheriff’s Department stated.
