Drivers who customarily use Colorado Boulevard in southeast Denver are being urged to avoid the area because of a major traffic light malfunction.
Stacey Stegman, spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Transportation, said that the traffic lights at Colorado Boulevard and South Cherry Creek Drive are out.
She said the malfunction has caused heavy traffic backups and congestion in the area, particularly along Colorado Boulevard.
In order to avoid the area she is urging drivers to stay off Colorado Boulevard, which is also Colorado State Highway 2.
Stegman suggests drivers seek alternate routes around the area including Evans Avenue and University Boulevard.
Stegman said it could be well be tonight before Xcel resolves the problem.Howard Pankratz: 303-954-1939 or hpankratz@denverpost.com.
