Vestas Wind Systems said Wednesday it received an order from Alta Wind Holdings for 190 wind turbines and that the blades and towers will be made in Colorado.
The turbines will generate 570 megawatts of power at four wind farms Alta operates in Kern County, Calif.
The purchase will cost Alta, a subsidiary of Terra-Gen Power, $1.2 billion, the biggest order Vestas has received in North America.
Two of the three Vestas factories in Colorado will be involved. The blades will be made at the Windsor plant, and the towers will be built at the Pueblo plant.
The first 50 turbines will begin producing energy by the end of the year, and the remainder in mid-2011.
Vestas is based in Denmark.
