DENVER—A man accused of killing a woman and then stuffing her body in a barrel claims he was insane at the time of the slaying.

Ahmad Clewis-Green is on trial in Denver for first-degree murder in the October 2008 slaying of 27-year-old Esperanza Pardue.

During opening statements, prosecutor Alma Staub told jurors that two court-appointed doctors found that Clewis-Green had mental problems but was not insane at the time of the slaying.

Defense attorney Albert Zweig told jurors that the doctors evaluated Clewis-Green after he had been stabilized with medication.

Police say Clewis-Green told them he repeatedly hit Pardue in the head with a metal pipe after she went to his apartment to have sex for money.
