The National Park Service will waive entrance fees to all parks on Aug. 14 and 15, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced today.
“This fee-free weekend provides an opportunity for individuals and families alike to take an affordable vacation or to explore a nearby park they have never visited before,” Salazar said in a released statement.
The fee waiver does not include other fees such as those for camping, reservations, tours and use of concessions.
Many of the 391 parks across the country will have free events the same weekend including military encampments and firing demonstrations at Gettysburg, Fort Laramie, Fort McHenry and others.
There will also be ranger-led programs with free instruction and equipment loans for snorkeling at Cape Cod, kayaking at DeSoto, or canoeing in Congaree or Big Cypress.
