Crews continued to work late Tuesday on a ruptured natural-gas line in central Denver.

Lt. Phil Champagne of the Denver Fire Department said a drilling contractor ruptured a 12-inch gas main about 2:30 p.m. near Speer Boulevard and Logan Street. Roads were closed during rush hour, and a two-story building in the area was evacuated.

Xcel Energy spokeswoman Michelle Aguayo said crews were expected to work through the night to repair the line. She said the line had to be drained before any welding could be done.

Xcel Energy said the contractor wasn’t working for the utility.
