The Southwest monsoon season could bring slow-moving storms, heavy downpours and flash flooding to southern, central and eastern Colorado tonight, the National Weather Service said this afternoon.

A flood watch is in effect until 10 p.m.

Some areas of the Eastern Plains could get 3 to 5 inches tonight, while a swath from the Sangre de Cristo mountains and San Luis Valley to El Paso and Teller counties, could get 1 to 2 inches in a short duration, forecasters said.

Officials are urging people planning backcountry and canyon trips in western Colorado and eastern Utah this week to use extra caution and consult local conditions.

The metro region could see scattered showers and thunderstorms this evening, with a 40 percent chance of precipitation.

A 30 percent chance of rain lingers for Denver on Thursday with a high near 85 degrees.
