The Rockies on Tuesday activated veteran first baseman Todd Helton, and optioned infielder Jonathan Herrera to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Helton’s back and legs checked out fine with team doctors, leading him to return to the starting lineup today against the Giants at Coors Field. He will hit second in the lineup and start at first base.

Center fielder Dexter Fowler avoided the disabled list, after his sore left ribs felt better today. He crashed into outfield wall making an impressive catch Sunday against the Cubs.

Helton has not played after the all-star break, but had five hits over the weekend for short-season Single A Casper.

“I feel pretty good. It made me feel young again playing agaisnt those kids,” Helton said.
