Lance Armstrong and RadioShack teammate Levi Leipheimer will race in the Leadville 100 mountain bike race next weekend.
Armstrong had said earlier he was leaning toward entering, and race organizers said they received Leipheimer’s entry form for next Saturday’s race.
The race starts at 10,500 feet, climbs 2,000 more feet and is considered the nation’s highest-altitude endurance test. Armstrong is the defending champion, winning last year in a record time of 6 hours, 28 minutes, 50 seconds.
Leipheimer, who won his second straight Tour of the Gila this year, missed last year’s race in Leadville. This will be his first mountain bike race.
Franklin second in 200 backstroke.
Missy Franklin, The Denver Post’s female swimmer of the year after her freshman season at Regis Jesuit High School, finished second in the 200-meter backstroke at the USA Swimming National Championships in Irvine, Calif.
Elizabeth Beisel, a 2008 Olympian who finished third in the event at last year’s world championships, won with a time of 2:08.50. Franklin, who is swimming for the Colorado Stars team, finished in 2:09.74.
Mammoth adds goaltender.
The Colorado Mammoth selected 2010 National Lacrosse League goaltender of the year Matt Vinc with the first pick in a dispersal draft of Orlando Titans players. Vinc posted a 10-5 record last season with a .810 save percentage, stopping 609 shots — all league bests.
Mammoth president and general manager Steve Govett said Vinc is “arguably the best in the league and should be a huge asset for the Mammoth in coming years.”
In rounds two through five of the draft, the Mammoth selected Jarett Park and Chad Thompson, both transition players, forward Marc Burton and defenseman Bryan Barrett.
Garmin rider maintains lead.
Garmin-Transitions’ Daniel Martin of Ireland retained the leader’s jersey with a seventh-place finish in the sixth stage of the Tour of Poland, although his lead in the overall standings fell from 14 to eight seconds heading into today’s final stage.
Bauke Mollema of the Netherlands and Team Rabobank won the stage from Oswiecim to Terma Bukovina Tatrazanka with a time of 5:54.30.
