A fire that started in a bush outside an Aurora townhome spread to the building and gutted a residence early this morning. No one was injured.

The fire started at about 2:25 a.m. at 12773 E. Ford Ave., said Capt. Allen Robnett, an Aurora Fire Department spokesman.

A driver passing by spotted the bush fire and called 911, Robnett said. About 25 people who live in the multi-unit building evacuated their homes.

The fire spread to the building’s siding and raced up and into the attic. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to just one unit.

All residents are able to return to their homes with the exception of the people in the heavily damaged unit.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Damage to the unit was estimated at about $120,000.
