COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—A ceremonial uncasing of the flags of Fort Carson’s 4th Brigade Combat Team has marked the end of the team’s yearlong tour in Afghanistan, where 39 of the soldiers died.
Col. Randy George, commander of the 3,800-soldier brigade, presided over the ceremony Friday at the post south of Colorado Springs. The names of those killed in the tour that ended in June were read before hundreds of people assembled at the Memorial Grove outside the post’s main gate.
Another 311 soldiers were wounded in combat.
Members of the 4th brigade are veterans of fierce urban fighting in Iraq. In Afghanistan, most were deployed along the country’s eastern border with Pakistan.
