DENVER—Gov. Bill Ritter is requesting federal disaster for Otero and Montrose counties where cold weather and hail have damaged crops.
Ritter said Friday that he sent a letter to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack seeking disaster designation for the two counties.
Officials in Otero County in southeastern Colorado say nearly 50 percent of the melon crop has been damaged or destroyed by freezing temperatures and hail.
Cold weather wiped out nearly all of Montrose County’s sweet cherry crop in western Colorado.
