STOCKHOLM — Tyson Gay upset defending world and Olympic champion Usain Bolt on Friday in a 100-meter race between the two fastest runners in history.
Gay beat the Jamaican at the DN Galan meet in 9.84 seconds at the same stadium where Bolt last lost a race two years ago.
Gay drew away while Bolt strained to keep up and finished second in 9.97. Richard Thompson of Trinidad was third in 10.10.
Thomas rejoins Knicks
NEW YORK — The New York Knicks rehired Isiah Thomas as a consultant, two years after he was fired as its coach and president.
Thomas, a Hall of Famer with the Detroit Pistons, had a dismal run as team president from December 2003 to April 2008 with the Knicks, never winning a postseason game despite often having the NBA’s highest payroll. He also was the coach the final two seasons, getting dismissed after a 23-59 season in 2007-08. He will continue coaching Florida International University.
• Forward Anthony Tolliver said he has chosen to play for the Minnesota Timberwolves in a short video posted on YouTube that mocks superstar LeBron James‘ much-maligned “The Decision” special on ESPN last month.
In the spoof, a woman off-camera asks Tolliver, who averaged 11.7 points and seven rebounds last season, when he made his decision.
“Um, I think I made my decision this morning while using the bathroom,” Tolliver deadpans. “It just came to me.”
• Free-agent swingman Keith Bogans agreed to a deal with the Chicago Bulls.
Alabama rolls along as No. 1
TYSONS CORNER, Va. — Defending national champion Alabama is No. 1 atop the USA Today preseason coaches’ football poll.
The Crimson Tide got 55-of-59 possible first-place votes. The other four went to Ohio State, which is No. 2, followed by Florida, Texas, Boise State, Virginia Tech, TCU, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Iowa.
• ESPN reported that Tennessee expects to receive a letter of inquiry soon about possible violations under former coach Lane Kiffin.
• The University of Miami is being investigated for possible NCAA violations, saying the probe surrounds “impermissible text messages and telephone calls to prospective student-athletes.”
• Backup Texas quarterback Sherrod Harris said he won’t return for his final season so he can focus on getting his degree.
• Southern California fullback Stanley Havili has been banned from team activities as punishment for injuring teammate T.J. Bryant in a fight last week.
• The King County (Wash.) Medical Examiner’s Office said former Florida safety John Curtis IV died Thursday due to injuries from a suicide attempt. He was 24.
