AURORA, Colo.—The Aurora City Council plans to interview five candidates for city manager in closed sessions despite questions about the legality of interviewing them in secret meetings.

Colorado Press Association legal counsel Chris Beall says it is illegal under the state open meetings law to conduct interviews for executive positions in closed meetings.

But City Attorney Charlie Richardson says Aurora is complying with state rules. He says city officials have been interviewing candidates in closed sessions for 30 years.

Local governments must release finalists’ names when the field of candidates is narrowed to three. Richardson says because the pool has been cut to five instead of three, the city won’t name the finalists.

Aurora will replace Ron Miller, who retired in February after 13 years as city manager.
