DEL MAR, Calif. — Zenyatta won her 18th consecutive race to remain unbeaten, taking the Clement L. Hirsch Stakes at Del Mar.
The 6-year-old mare outran Rinterval in a tight duel to the finish line in the 1 1-16-mile race Saturday. Under Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith, she covered the distance in 1:45.03.
It was her fourth Grade 1 win of the year, to go with victories in the Vanity Handicap, the Apple Blossom on dirt at Arkansas’ Oaklawn Park and the Santa Margarita Handicap.
• Blame, ridden by Garrett Gomez, rallied in the stretch to overtake heavily favored Quality Road in the final strides and win the $750,000 Whitney Handicap by a head at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
• Muscle Massive edged Lucky Chucky by a half-length in the $1.5 million Hambletonian for 3-year- old trotters at the Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford, N.J.
Baghdatis, Nalbandian in final
WASHINGTON — Eighth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis served up 11 aces, was broken only once and beat Xavier Malisse 6-2, 7-6 (4) in the Legg Mason Tennis Classic semifinals to reach his second ATP final of 2010.
In today’s final as a tuneup for the U.S. Open, Baghdatis will meet fourth-seeded David Nalbandian, who overwhelmed No. 13 Marin Cilic 6-2, 6-2.
• Fourth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska, ranked 10th in the world, reached her first final in 10 months with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Daniela Hantuchova at the Mercury Insurance Open in Carlsbad, Calif.
Unseeded Svetlana Kuznetsova defeated fifth-seeded Flavia Pennetta 6-4, 6-0 in the other semifinal.
Revolution blanks D.C. United
FOXBOROUGH, Ma. — Midfielder Pat Phelan‘s first goal of the season gave the New England Revolution a 1-0 MLS victory over D.C. United.
• Nana Attakora and Chad Barrett each scored in the first half as Toronto FC beat Chivas USA 2-1 to extend its home unbeaten streak to 10 games.
• Kei Kamara and Robbie Findley traded first-half goals, with Findley’s equalizer salvaging a 1-1 draw for visiting Real Salt Lake against the Kansas City Wizards.
Storm wallops Shock
SEATTLE — Reserve Svetlana Abrosimova had 20 points as the Seattle Storm beat the Tulsa Shock 111-65 in a clash between the teams with the WNBA’s best and worst records.
Seattle (24-4) set a league record for largest margin of victory (46 points), topping by one point a win by the Houston Comets in 1998.
• Seimone Augustus scored 27 points, including the tiebreaking 3-pointer with 26.9 seconds left in overtime, to lead the Minnesota Lynx to an 87-82 victory over the Chicago Sky.
