• With only five laps remaining, Smith was in 17th place when the right-side track bar mount broke.
• The breakdown ended Smith’s race, and the team missed out on a top-20 finish, placing 34th.
• The result was tough for Smith, who started his racing career at age 4 in Cato, N.Y., which is 70 miles north of Watkins Glen. “The finish makes it even more disappointing because of the number of family, friends and fans who were here today,” Smith said.
