Black Diamond’s Octane backpack (MSRP: $140) isn’t the only daypack out there with “independent suspension,” but its patent-pending ergoACTIV suspension system is surely among the best.
With a soft, mesh hip belt that pivots around a central attachment point, the panel-loading pack encourages athletic movement on even the most demanding terrain as it contours with every stride.
A zippered main compartment is hydration compatible and allows easy access to day-long adventure necessities, while the hip belt includes a separate stash pocket. Side pockets and a compression front pocket stretch to accommodate accessories such as a rain layer, trekking poles or a helmet. Ice-ax loops are also sewn into the 210-denier nylon ripstop shell.
Large sizes expand to 1,831 cubic inches (30 liters) at 2 pounds, 14 ounces (1.32kg) while medium sizes are 1,700 cubic inches (28L) at 2 pounds, 11 ounces (1.22kg). The smaller, women’s-specific Spark is also available from Black Diamond.
