SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Star running back Delone Carter is returning to Syracuse.

Carter was suspended last semester and did not participate in spring practice after being charged with misdemeanor assault after a one-punch fight that followed a snowball-throwing incident on campus in February.

Orange coach Doug Marrone said he received a phone call from Carter early Monday afternoon with the news. Marrone, beginning his second year, said it’s too early to tell if Carter will start because he hasn’t seen what kind of condition the senior tailback is in.

“It’s for me to judge whether he’s playing or not,” Marrone said. “We’ll see the physical shape.”

Carter led Syracuse last season with 1,021 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns.

Footnotes.

New Mexico defensive backs Nathan Enriquez and A.J. Williams have been dismissed from the team for an undisclosed rules violation.

• Texas right guard Tray Allen will likely miss the rest of training camp after aggravating a left foot injury he suffered this past spring.

• UTEP coach Mike Price said starting cornerback Travaun Nixon will miss the Miners’ Sept. 4 opener against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, and backup receiver Marlon McClure will miss the first two games of the season for violating unspecified team rules.
