Fishermen heading to Stagecoach Reservoir can expect the water level to be down 10 feet by Labor Day and 15 feet by Sept. 18 to accommodate construction work on the dam. The drawdown of the reservoir south of Steamboat Springs will cause some significant changes in recreational activities at Stagecoach State Park and increase the volume of flow in the Yampa River below.

The Morrison Cove boat ramp will close for the season Friday, and the boat ramp at the marina will shut down Sept. 7. Trailered boats will not be permitted after the closures but hand-launched craft such as belly boats and canoes will be allowed.

The parking area by the dam will be closed after Sunday and will remain closed until the projected construction completion date of Nov. 30. The Elk Run Trail from the dam to Morrison Cove also will be closed at that time.

A significant portion of the tailwater will be closed for about a week in October.

Flows in the river below the dam will be around 142 cubic feet per second through the remainder of the summer. That is about 60 cfs above average for the season.

“That’s actually a good thing,” Rob Burden of the Steamboat Flyfisher shop said. “Sometimes the flow can get pretty low this time of year. Now we don’t have to worry about it.”
