A section of Interstate 80 in southwest Wyoming was closed for about an hour Tuesday night after a motorist spotted something that looked like a bomb tied to a girder on an overpass, the Wyoming Highway Patrol said.

After a bomb squad robot removed the device and it was blasted with water, it was found not to be explosive, according to the Wyoming Highway Patrol.

“It is still not clear exactly what the device was or who may have put it there,” the agency said in a statement at 11 p.m.

The device, which had wires hanging from it, was found near Point of Rocks about 25 miles east of Rock Springs.

Troopers had earlier notified the Wyoming Homeland Security Office about the device.
