Angela Williams appeared to be winning a three-way Democratic battle for the northeast Denver seat now held by House Speaker Terrance Carroll, one of the most closely watched Democratic legislative races this primary.
In early returns, Williams was leading with 56.3 percent of the vote over Jon Goldin-Dubois, who had 24.8 percent, and Mark Meh ringer, who had 18.7 percent.
All three House District 7 candidates live in Stapleton, though the district includes other portions of northeast Denver.
Mehringer swore off money from political action committees, hoping to rely instead on his reputation as an effective neighborhood association president. Williams for a time was the lone black candidate for the legislature, sparking concerns there could be no blacks in the General Assembly next year.
Goldin-DuBois is white but has lined up an array of black supporters.
