Wyoming suspended kicker Ian Watts and two other football players for the Cowboys’ first game of the season against Southern Utah.

Coach Dave Christensen said Wednesday that Watts, reserve cornerback Kenny Browder and freshman running back Nehemie Kankolongo violated team rules. He declined to provide further details.

Watts ranked third in the Mountain West Conference last season in field-goal percentage, converting 12-of-15 attempts as a freshman.

Christensen also said freshman wide receiver Turmour Battle has been dismissed from the team and redshirt freshman free safety Larry Mitchell and sophomore wide receiver David Tooley decided to leave the team because of personal reasons.

• Colorado’s Scotty McKnight was one of 51 players named to the watch list for the Biletnikoff Award, given to the nation’s top wide receiver.

CU seventh in Big 12 poll.

The Colorado women’s soccer team was projected to finish seventh in the Big 12 this season in a poll of the league’s coaches.

The Buffs received 54 points in the poll. Texas A&M was projected to win the Big 12 championship with eight first-place votes and 95 points.

Junior defender Bri Young, a former Chaparral High School star, was one of three Texas A&M players on the preseason all-Big 12 team.

Walla advances, Huffer bows out.

Kristin Walla of Aspen and former University of Denver golfer Stephanie Sherlock advanced through the round of 64 at the U.S. Women’s Amateur at Charlotte (N.C.) Country Club, but Becca Huffer of Littleton was eliminated.

Walla, a former Texas golfer, defeated Brooke Beeler of Butler, Ill., 2 and 1. Sherlock posted a 6-and-4 victory over Hannah O’Sullivan of Cupertino, Calif.

Huffer, who plays college golf for Notre Dame, lost 4 and 3 to Doris Chen of Bradenton, Fla.
