NIWOT, Colo.—Boulder County authorities are trying to find out who’s been leaving explosive plastic bottles around recreation areas in a Niwot subdivision.
Sheriff’s deputies found the remains of four plastic bottles that had exploded when they checked a report of a suspicious item Wednesday at the swimming pool in the Somerset subdivision. More explosive devices were found Thursday near the pool, tennis courts and nearby field.
One of the bottles exploded in the pool house, causing $1,000 in damage. The sheriff’s office says the plastic bottles contained a liquid chemical and aluminum foil. Authorities say the chemical reaction produces flammable hydrogen gas.
